A Colonial Farm

Liliana holds her partly made candle (wick tied to stick which is repeatedly dipped in wax)

Candlemaking at a Colonial Farm

Soup--made on an open fire.
During our vacation, we visited a colonial homestead where we ate soup (made from vegetables picked from their garden) that was cooked over an outdoor fire in a nice big iron pot.  We also dipped candles and created our own taper (quite the laborious process--although I loved walking with Liliana around the ring until it was our turn to dip our candle in the wax pot).  And what day would be complete without a horse ride for Liliana?!?

Liliana marches in the circle that keeps winding past the kettle which holds the melted candle wax.
Liliana holds a stick with a wick tied to it.  She dips the long string into the wax and then keeps marching until the wax cools, and by that time, she's back at the kettle again so she dips again to add another layer of wax!
 Eventually, a candle is made!

Holding her candle taper (in progress!).

Liliana's horse ride!
